Martin Svatoš, Ph.D. is one of the leading Czech mediators and arbitrators. Martin has mediated more than 1,100 international and domestic cases. He is the Head of the ADR Centre at the Charles University School of Law. His experience in alternative dispute resolution was recognized when he became a member of the Board of the Czech Arbitration Court. In 2016, he served as a member of the Czech delegation to UNCITRAL Working Group II and previously as President of the ICC Czech Republic Working Group for Mediation. He is also a long-standing member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR and a member of the Ministry of Justice of the Czech Republic’s working group on mediation. In addition, he serves as an examiner at the State Mediation Exam organized by the same ministry.
He is included on the official list of mediators of the Czech Ministry of Justice, the Energy Community, and the joint panel of WIPO–CAM. He also serves as a mediator before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS/TAS). As an arbitrator, he has acted as chair, co-arbitrator, and counsel in numerous proceedings. He is listed as arbitrator by the Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC), the Arbitration Court of the Czech Football Association, and the Czech Arbitration Court.
In academia, Martin lectures at Charles University in Prague, where he teaches negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and contract law. In the past, he also lectured at the Seminar of European and Comparative Law in Urbino, Italy, and at the University of the French West Indies in Guadeloupe. His international teaching record further includes lectures and presentations at institutions such as the Faculté Libre de Droit, Institut Catholique de Toulouse (France), Georgetown University (USA), Comenius University in Bratislava (Slovakia), Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (China).
Martin is the co-editor of the EU Mediation Handbook (Kluwer International, 2017) and the author of several other books and numerous articles. He is a frequent speaker at major international conferences, including the UIA World Forum of Mediation Centres, the IBA Annual Conference, the German Arbitration Institute Annual Conference, and the Conference of the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland in Dublin.
Through his extensive practice, academic involvement, and international engagements, Martin Svatoš has contributed significantly to the development of mediation and arbitration in Central Europe and worldwide.
